Innovation Boost for the Energy Transition: A Review of the Smart Infrastructure Challenge 2025

Written by Adrian Slowik | 26 May 2026

The transformation of the energy and infrastructure industry is one of the greatest global tasks of our time. The oil and gas industry, in particular, is under enormous pressure: processes must be accelerated, energy efficiency must be increased, and CO2 emissions need to be drastically reduced. Conventional approaches are often insufficient to solve these complex problems at the necessary speed. This is exactly where the Smart Infrastructure Challenge 2025 came in.

Challenge-as-a-Service: Finding Ideal Startup Solutions in the Market

The Smart Infrastructure Challenge 2025 was one of various Innovation Challenges conducted by SpinLab & Bitroad on behalf of larger companies and corporations. These clients provide the specific topic areas and challenges, while the SpinLab team handles the project management. The clients for this challenge included ExxonMobil, Equinor, K+S, and enviaM, several established, multinational energy companies.

The goal of the challenge was clearly defined: to identify and validate new, fast approaches in infrastructure development to drive the energy transition forward. However, to find these approaches our typical and structured process of an "Innovation Challenges," consists of the following steps:

  • Preparation & Scoping: Together with the partners, topics were narrowed down and 4 specific "Sub-Challenges" were formulated to address the most pressing problems.

  • Scouting & Application Phase: A global call was used to search for startups and innovative solution providers who submitted their approaches digitally.

  • Selection & Pitch Event: An expert team evaluated the submissions, after which the most promising solutions were presented at a pitch event.

The Four Sub-Challenges

The four corporate partners of the challenge agreed on the following four Sub-Challenges to limit the scope while simultaneously identifying a diverse range of solutions:

  • Transport and Storage: Focus on hydrogen storage, pipeline monitoring, and energy resilience.

  • Digitalization & Proptech: Use of digital twins and scalable, modular construction methods to increase efficiency in construction.

  • Alternative Finished Products: Search for solutions for advanced raw materials such as biofuels and drop-in ready intermediate products.

  • Circular Economy & Emissions Tracking: Technologies for leak detection, carbon capture, and sustainable operations management.

Results That Speak for Themselves

The Smart Infrastructure Challenge 2025 successfully functioned as a bridge between the agile startup world and established corporations in the energy and construction sectors. The response confirmed the need for such open innovation formats:

  • 90+ startups and solution providers applied with their technologies.

  • 12 finalists were selected from this qualified pool for the pitch event.

  • 4 winners ultimately prevailed in the respective Sub-Challenges.

However, the most important indicator for the success of such a challenge is not the number of applications, but the actual implementation. As a direct result, pilot projects were initiated between the winners and the partner companies to test and further develop the solutions in real-world scenarios.

That's a wrap

The Smart Infrastructure Challenge 2025 exemplifies how SpinLab and Bitroad support companies in breaking through innovation blockades. By systematically networking global market leaders with innovative actors from the fields of Proptech, Sustainability, and Hydrogen, synergies arise that go far beyond theoretical concepts.
