Y-SiC Group (formerly Yellow SIC), the deep-tech startup and graduate of our 14th class, has secured an impressive €50 million in its latest funding round.
This investment marks another significant milestone in the company’s rapid growth, pushing the total amount raised by SpinLab alumni beyond the €1 billion mark. The investment comes from the German state of Saarland and steel producer Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS), who are contributing €25 million each. The new capital will enable Y-SiC to build its first commercial production facility at the Dillinger Hütte steelworks in Dillingen, Germany, with commercial production scheduled to begin in 2027.
Y-SiC has developed a novel process for producing silicon carbide (SiC)—a critical semiconductor material used extensively in modern power electronics, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other energy-efficient technologies.
Traditional silicon carbide manufacturing is notoriously energy-intensive, requiring immense amounts of power to synthesize the raw material. Y-SiC has addressed this bottleneck by engineering a continuous production process that, according to the company, consumes up to 80% less energy while simultaneously delivering more consistent, high-grade product quality.
In addition to its energy efficiency, the project holds vital strategic importance for Europe. A significant share of the silicon carbide raw material used in global semiconductor manufacturing currently originates outside the continent, particularly in Asia. By establishing local, large-scale production in Germany, Y-SiC aims to reduce these geopolitical dependencies and strengthen Europe’s domestic semiconductor supply chain.
Under the leadership of founder Christopher Höfener, the funding will allow Y-SiC to transition from development to commercial-scale manufacturing at the industrial site in Saarland. By integrating its facility into the Dillinger Hütte steelworks, Y-SiC creates direct synergies between traditional German industry and next-generation clean-tech manufacturing.
