10 Digital Health Apps (DiGAs) in Germany you should know

22 June 2023

Digital health applications have been transforming the way we approach healthcare, empowering individuals to take control of their well-being with the help of technology. Germany has embraced this digital revolution, paving the way for the emergence of a unique class of digital applications called DiGA. The German Digital Healthcare Act was implemented on December 19, 2019, with the aim of facilitating the integration of digital health applications into the medical field.

A Digital Health Application (DiGA), refers to a category of medical devices that leverage digital technologies to provide healthcare solutions. DiGAs are designed to have low risk and are intended to support preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, or rehabilitative measures for individuals' health and well-being. These applications encompass a wide range of software programs, mobile applications, or digital tools that can be used on various devices. DiGAs undergo testing and evaluation by the Federal Office for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) to ensure their safety, efficacy, and adherence to regulatory standards. When a DiGA successfully meets these criteria and is included in the list of reimbursable digital health apps, its costs can be covered by health insurance funds, either through a prescription from healthcare professionals or directly from the health insurance company.
