WHAT IS INNOVATION SCOUTING?

Innovation scouting refers to the systematic search for and evaluation of startups, scale-ups, research groups, or project teams that are relevant to a company's specific innovation initiative or challenge. The goal is to identify, from the multitude of available innovations, those that fit the requirement profile. For example, that meet technological and organizational requirements, are at the right stage of maturity, and qualify as a partner for a pilot project or collaboration.

SpinLab offers Innovation Scouting as a standalone service: based on a purpose-built database and knowledge from over a decade of experience in the ecosystem.

WHY SPINLAB

What makes good innovation scouting

  • The right match
It's not the longest list that counts, but the best fit. We combine data, industry knowledge, network, and direct communication with candidates to identify innovations that truly fit your initiative technologically and strategically and that can meet your internal requirements.

  • Proven time savings
Internal scouting processes tie up resources for weeks. We deliver a qualified shortlist typically within one to three weeks, so you can focus on the decision, not the research.

  • In-depth profiles
On request, you receive information that public databases cannot reliably provide: technology maturity level, degree of fulfillment of your requirements, funding status, reference customers, scalability, founding date, number of employees, industry tag, technology tag, business model, short and long descriptions, and social media profiles.

THE CHALLENGE

Why innovation scouting fails without a systematic approach

Common databases often deliver overly generic results. Manual research via LinkedIn or Google costs time and can easily overlook relevant players. Especially for specific technological questions,  such as startups in hydrogen storage, AI-based predictive maintenance, or chemical recycling,  the search quickly becomes complex. Technological or organizational conditions and requirements need to be checked in detail against potential solution providers. This is a step that neither databases nor AI can currently deliver reliably.

The real challenge rarely lies in finding information, but in evaluating it: Which startups are technologically relevant? Which are at the right stage of maturity? Which fit the specific initiative? Which founding teams have high chances of survival and scaling?

OUR APPROACH

Scouting with proprietary technology and ecosystem knowledge

SpinLab scouts innovations based on your specific requirements. We continuously aggregate data from company websites, LinkedIn profiles, industry publications, and other public sources and make it structured and searchable.

Our focus is on B2B startups and scaleups in the fields of Industry 4.0, energy, smart city, construction and infrastructure, mobility, health, semiconductors, IoT, robotics, bioeconomy, and AgriFood tech — the fields in which the SpinLab Group has particular expertise and networks.

Technology alone does not make a good selection. What matters is our assessment: technological relevance, stage of maturity, strategic fit.

PROCESS

How an innovation scouting project works

  1. Needs clarification
Together we define your search criteria: technology area, industry, geographic focus, desired stage of maturity, as well as concrete technical, organizational, or legal requirements. The more precise the criteria, the more accurate the results. If the need or the problem itself is still unclear, you are welcome to add a problem-identification workshop.

  2. Scouting and evaluation
We research and evaluate innovations according to your criteria: technologically, strategically, and in terms of fit with your initiative. New relevant topics are added directly as needed. On request, we can monitor the search area for you on an ongoing basis and provide newly emerging innovators, e.g. on a monthly basis.

  3. Delivery of results
You receive a qualified shortlist with a short description, technology focus, team background, funding status, and contact details as a direct working basis for your next steps. We hand over a list of prioritized recommendations.

  4. Optional: Contact facilitation & Venture Clienting project
If identified teams are part of the SpinLab network, we support the initial approach. If needed, we also support you with our structured project management for projects between startups and established institutions (Venture Clienting).

INVESTMENT

Cost and scope
Startup scouting is offered on a project basis. The scope depends on the complexity of the search criteria and the desired depth of research.

Ad-hoc scouting from €2,000
Targeted shortlist for a specific technology question. Delivered within a few days. Additional scouting use cases can be implemented on request.

WHEN TO USE INNOVATION SCOUTING

Which situations scouting is suited for

  • Specific technology question
You are looking for solutions to a specific problem, such as AI-based solutions for predictive maintenance or projects in chemical recycling, and can name technical and organizational requirements

  • Market overview
You want to know which teams are active in a technology field - as a basis for decision-making or in preparation for a larger initiative.

  • Preparing a pilot project
You are planning a Venture Clienting project and need a well-founded initial list of relevant candidates.

  • Continuous monitoring
You want to be continuously informed about new relevant innovations in your field.
