As the share of renewable energy continues to grow, the energy system is undergoing significant change. Electricity generated from wind and solar depends on weather conditions, making supply less predictable. At the same time, market prices are becoming more volatile, and managing energy assets is increasingly complex. These developments are driving demand for new approaches. Not only in infrastructure, but also in how energy is operated and traded.

A significant milestone for the Leipzig startup ecosystem: The British technology group Tracsis plc announced the acquisition of Vesputi, a digital ticketing specialist and alumni of the 6th class of SpinLab. With a transaction volume of up to €8.2 million, the British rail software provider secures strategic access to the complex German public transport market.

SpinLab kicked off with its 20th cohort as an anniversary class. The new class comprises 10 startups working on solutions to challenges in the fields of energy, construction, circular economy and digital health. Over a period of six months, the teams are supported in the further development of their business models and in validating their solutions in the market. A key focus is on collaboration with established companies through the venture clienting approach, in which startups work with corporate partners at an early stage as technology providers to implement real-world use cases.

Here are the 10 new SpinLab Startups

SpinLab welcomes its newest class of startups, each developing solutions to address challenges in sectors such as energy, healthcare, construction, and hospitality. Their ideas range from AI systems that automate complex document processes to medical apps that support patients between doctor visits, and from energy platforms that optimize consumption to tools that improve communication in the service industry. Together, they demonstrate how technology can create practical and scalable impact across different markets.

The Leipzig Summer School for Diverse Startups, an initiative by SpinLab and HHL Digital Space, returns for its fifth year. Once again, it will support early-stage startups led by underrepresented founders. The program offers participants a customized experience to help them develop and refine their business ideas.

The healthtech startup LipoCheck has successfully raised €2.5 million in a seed financing round. The funds will be used to further develop the platform, expand telemedicine services, and drive internationalization.

SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator launches its 18th class, featuring nine innovative startups. According to the Financial Times and Statista’s “Europe’s Leading Start-Up Hubs 2024” ranking, SpinLab ranks among Europe’s leading startup hubs. The participating teams will undergo an intensive six-month program tailored to their specific needs. In addition to personalized coaching, the startups gain access to a comprehensive network of industry-leading companies, experienced mentors, and investors. Over 180 startups have already developed their business ideas through SpinLab’s accelerator programs, attracting more than €390 million in investments with a survival rate of 86%.

From this pool, nine startups have been selected in the fields of renewable energy, Smart City, and E-Health. Among the selected startups are an AI-based health solution for detecting addictive behavior, a team using technologies for CO₂ removal through underground storage of woody biomass to sequester carbon for the long term, and a technology for direct heat generation from wind energy, which efficiently feeds heat into heating networks, promoting the decarbonization of district heating. SpinLab has already supported more than 160 startups, with a survival rate of 86 percent. By joining the accelerator program, the teams receive an extensive and tailored coaching and mentoring program, as well as access to a broad network of partners and investors.
